Dustless Sanding in Marietta: The Short Answer
The Hardwood Guys does virtually dustless hardwood floor sanding in Marietta, GA, including East Cobb. We sand with a Hyper Grinder HG by I-4WOOD, a 4 HP planetary sander that connects straight to a dust extractor and pulls dust into the vacuum right at the disc as it cuts.
We call it virtually dustless because that is the honest description, and we never claim 100%. No sanding method removes every particle of dust, so you still cover a few things. What you get is a lot less dust in the air and on your surfaces than older equipment without integrated extraction leaves behind, and a lot less cleanup once the crew packs up for the day.
We work from our base in Woodstock, GA and are in Marietta and East Cobb regularly. For a free on-site estimate, call or text 470-826-3581.
How Our Dustless Sanding Works
A Hyper Grinder HG, not a drum
Our planetary sander is a Hyper Grinder HG by I-4WOOD, a 4 HP, 1-230V multi-disc machine with its own LED ring light around the sanding head. Instead of one big drum spinning against the floor, it drives several smaller discs across the surface at once, each cutting in a different direction. The same head works the field and the edges, so there is no separate edger leaving its own swirl pattern where it meets the floor.
Where the dust goes
The sander connects straight to a dust extractor, so dust is pulled into the vacuum right at the disc as it cuts instead of going airborne and settling across the house. The sanders run into a sealed containment vacuum, so the dust ends up in the drum instead of on your cabinets and trim. We still lay down plastic sheeting at doorways to rooms outside the work area.
Sanding in stages
A full sand runs in stages: a coarser first pass strips the old finish and levels the boards, then progressively finer passes with the planetary sander prepare the bare wood for stain.
Machines bought, not rented
We bought the machines that make the difference instead of renting whatever the supply house had left that morning. The dustless planetary sanding page has photos of the equipment.
What Virtually Dustless Means (and Doesn't)
We call it virtually dustless because that is the honest description. Here is what that does and does not cover.
What it means
- Dust is pulled into the vacuum right at the disc as the machine cuts, instead of going airborne.
- A lot less dust in the air and on your surfaces than older equipment without integrated extraction.
- A lot less cleanup once the crew packs up for the day.
- A job most homeowners stay in the house through.
What it does not mean
- It does not mean 100% dust-free. No sanding method removes every particle of dust, and we will not promise that.
- We do not quote a dust-capture figure.
- You will still want to cover a few things.
- Plastic sheeting still goes up at doorways to rooms outside the work area.
Drum and Edger vs. Planetary
The sanding stage decides how flat and even a floor looks for as long as you own it, because the finish only sits on top of whatever the sanding left behind. These four rows are the short version. The full comparison is on our dustless planetary sanding page.
| Drum + Edger | Planetary (Hyper Grinder HG) | |
|---|---|---|
| Flatness | Cuts hard in one direction; dwelling too long can leave stop marks, chatter or waves | Several discs cut in different directions at once, flattening the field instead of digging into it |
| Edge blending | A separate edger works the perimeter and can leave a visible ring where it meets the field | One head works the field and the edges, blending the perimeter into the rest of the floor |
| Dust | Varies with the machine and vacuum setup in use | Integrated extraction pulls the vast majority of dust into the vacuum right at the disc: virtually dustless, never claimed as 100% |
| Finish appearance | Waves, stop marks or a visible edger ring can telegraph through stain and finish | A flatter, more even surface reflects light evenly once the finish goes down |
Dustless Sanding for Marietta and East Cobb Homes
Marietta covers two kinds of housing, and a sanding job starts from what the floor has already been through.
Older homes near Marietta Square
Houses close to the Square can be well over a hundred years old, and their original floors have usually been sanded before. On a floor like that, the real question is how much wood is left above the tongue and groove, so we measure what is actually there before we say how many more refinishes it has. In Marietta we sand with dust-contained planetary sanders that pull the dust into the vacuum as we work.
Established neighborhoods in East Cobb
East Cobb is an unincorporated part of Cobb County, and most homes there have Marietta mailing addresses, so we treat it as part of our Marietta work. Many of its houses were built from the 1980s through the 2000s, with hardwood that is original to the build or was laid later where carpet used to be. The usual first question is whether the floor needs a full sand or only a screen and recoat. We look at it in person and tell you which before we quote either.
Most homeowners stay in the house during a dustless job. A cleaner job site each day is a big part of why that works.

Marietta, GA: Early American stain in an 84-year-old home
A home built in 1940 in historic Marietta. The floors were likely 15 to 20 years old and needed a refresh. We sanded and refinished them in an Early American stain with a traditional oil-based polyurethane finish. The property will now serve as an office.

Marietta, GA: Bona Red Out on new and older white oak
30-year-old and brand-new No. 1 grade white oak floors refinished together. Bona Red Out went on first to tone down the red in the oak, then Bona Natural Seal, then two coats of Bona HD Traffic for a matte look.

Our Process, Start to Finish
- Free on-site estimate
We look at the wood species, the finish that is already down and how much wear layer is left to work with, then confirm the plan.
- Written, itemized estimate
You get it after the on-site measure and before any work starts.
- Staged sanding, coarse to fine
A coarser first pass strips the old finish and levels the boards. Progressively finer passes with the planetary sander, dust extractor connected, then prepare the bare wood for stain.
- Stain test on your floor
If you are staining, we custom-mix the color on-site and test it on your actual floor before committing. See the stain color chart.
- Finish
We seal and topcoat with either Bona's water-based finish system or ProCoat's oil-modified Artisan Series, depending on the sheen, durability and dry time that fits your household.
How long it takes
A full sand-to-bare-wood refinish typically runs several days from first pass to final coat. If a screen and recoat is all you need, that is often finished in a single day. Either way, we give you a specific timeline in writing before work starts.

What Affects the Cost
We do not post a price for floor sanding, because it depends on the floor in front of us. Square footage, the condition of the existing floor, the wood species, whether you stain, the finish system, stairs and furniture moving all move the number. You get a free on-site estimate, then a written, itemized estimate before any work starts. Our cost guide explains each factor, and our hardwood floor refinishing page covers the full process.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you offer dustless sanding in Marietta?
Yes. The Hardwood Guys sands Marietta and East Cobb floors with a Hyper Grinder HG planetary sander connected to a dust extractor, and we serve Marietta from our base in Woodstock, GA. We call it virtually dustless. Call or text 470-826-3581 to set up a free on-site estimate.
Is dustless sanding 100% dust-free?
No, and we won't tell you it is. No sanding method removes every particle of dust. What integrated extraction does is pull the vast majority of the dust into the vacuum right at the disc as it cuts, instead of letting it go airborne and settle across the house. That is why we call it virtually dustless. We also lay down plastic sheeting at doorways to rooms outside the work area.
Can I stay in my home during dustless sanding?
Most homeowners stay in the house. Dust extraction at the disc and a cleaner job site each day are a big part of what makes staying through the project realistic. You will still want to cover a few things.
What is the difference between planetary and drum sanding?
A drum sander cuts hard in one direction along the grain and needs a separate edger for the perimeter, which can leave stop marks or a visible ring where the two meet. Our planetary sander drives several smaller discs across the floor at once, each cutting in a different direction, so it flattens the floor and blends the edges with the same head. See the full comparison on our dustless planetary sanding page.
Can you fix floors someone else sanded unevenly?
Often, yes. A planetary head is built to flatten a floor rather than follow the damage already in it, so it is a good fit for dips, waves and drum stop marks left by an earlier refinish. We look at the floor in person before promising an outcome.
Do I need a full sand or just a screen and recoat?
A full sand takes the floor down to bare wood. That is the only way to change the color or remove scratches that are in the wood. A screen and recoat renews only the finish and keeps your current color, so it suits a floor that looks dull but is still sound underneath. We look at the floor in person and tell you which one it needs before we recommend either.
How long does a dustless sanding job take?
A full sand-to-bare-wood refinish typically runs several days from first pass to final coat. A screen and recoat is often finished in a single day. We give you a specific timeline in writing before work starts.
Is the work warrantied?
Yes. Installs and full refinishes carry a 1-year warranty from completion, which covers the finish on your hardwood against peeling, cracking and chipping under normal home use. It does not cover screen and recoat, scratches, dents, pet damage, damage from moisture or dryness, or squeaks. See the warranty page for the full terms.
