Stair Refinishing in Woodstock, GA: Treads, Rails and Newels

We sand and refinish stair treads, refinish handrails and newels, and stain-match it all to your floors. We also install new treads, balusters and newels (see stair replacement), so one crew does it all, A to Z: we install, sand, stain and finish, and we can paint risers and balusters. The Hardwood Guys is family-run in Woodstock, GA, and owned by David Brannan. Call or text 470-826-3581.

Why Stairs Are Refinished by Hand

A floor can be sanded with a big machine. A staircase cannot. Our cost guide says there is no way to run a large floor sander over a staircase, so every tread, riser and stringer is worked by hand, with tight corners that take real time to sand and finish properly. It also says stairs are usually the single biggest cost driver per square foot on any job that has them.

Hand work has limits, and we state them up front. Rails and posts are hand-sanded, not machine-sanded flat like the floors, so expect a slightly different look and some roughness on the undersides and posts. That is written in our terms. Ask us at the free on-site estimate how it applies to your stairs.

Matching Stairs to Your Floors

A staircase sits next to a floor that is already there, so we choose the stain and finish with both in mind. Three jobs show how.

  • In Woodstock, we resanded a home’s main level and stair treads and finished both in Provincial stain with oil-based polyurethane, so the stairs match the floor.
  • On a Canton job with a Dark Walnut stain, we refinished all the stair treads, handrails and posts to match. The job also included new hardwood in the master bedroom and upstairs hallway.
  • On another Woodstock job, the customer chose an Early American stain so new white oak floors would complement the existing red oak stair treads.

A match has limits. Our terms say any rail work will produce a product that is not exactly like the floors, no matter which method is used. Existing rails and posts are sanded down and then refinished, and new rails are lightly sanded and then stained and finished, so the color will be similar to your floors, not identical. Our goal is a stain and finish that closely resembles your flooring. To start picking a color, see our stain colors.

Treads, Risers, Rails and Newels

Treads

Treads are the boards you step on. We sand them and finish them in the stain and finish you choose, so they match the floors around them. Our terms say we do not fix gaps in existing treads unless the estimate says so. Repairing gaps or adding new treads is extra work, and it goes on the estimate.

Risers

Risers close the front of each step. We offer painting of risers and balusters as an option. If you do not choose it, the stain can mark painted risers, stringers and trim, and you will want a painter to touch those up after we finish. New hardwood risers, as in a carpet-to-hardwood conversion, we finish to match the treads.

Handrails

Handrails are hand-sanded, not machine-sanded flat like the floors. An existing rail is sanded down and then refinished. A new rail that we install arrives raw, so we sand it lightly to clean it up, then stain and finish it. The color will be similar to your floors, not an exact match. Our terms say we should be able to smooth the areas your hand touches, while the undersides and posts will have some roughness.

Newels and posts

Newels are the heavy posts at the bottom, top and turns of a staircase. Existing newels and posts are sanded down by hand and then refinished, in a color similar to the floors rather than identical, and the posts themselves will show some roughness. If you would rather start with new posts, we install new newels too; see stair tread and baluster replacement.

Carpet to Hardwood Stairs

Carpeted stairs can become hardwood stairs. We take up the carpet, pad, tack strips and staples, then install hardwood treads and risers and finish them to match your floors. Because one crew does the carpet removal, the install and the finish, the new wood is matched to your floors by the same people who put it in.

You choose the species and the stain. We stock solid bullnose stair treads in red oak and in white oak, and the parts are listed on our red oak stair parts and white oak stair parts pages. Availability changes, so call 470-826-3581 to confirm what is in stock. Stair parts are included only when your estimate says so.

Refinish or Replace?

Refinish when your treads, rails and newels are sound and the trouble is color, a worn finish, or stairs that no longer match a floor you just redid. Refinishing keeps the wood you already have.

Replace when the parts themselves are the problem, or when you want a different look. Worn or cracked treads, or treads that will not match, can be replaced with new red oak or white oak treads, and new risers where needed. Wood balusters can be swapped for iron, and old rails and posts replaced with new newels and handrails. Our terms say we cannot promise to completely remove the color of an original finish, and that can only be done on newly installed products that have never been finished. That is one reason to replace instead of refinish.

Replacing rails or balusters can change how stable a rail feels, especially on runs over 12 ft long. Going from a classic white baluster to an iron one may need a ledger piece to lessen movement. That is also in our terms.

Many stair companies only install. We install and refinish: tear-out, new treads and risers, balusters, newels and rails, sanding, stain-matching to your floors and the final finish, all by one crew.

At the free on-site estimate we look at your stairs in person and talk through what you want, whether that is refinishing, replacing or both. See stair tread and baluster replacement for the parts we install, including box newels, handrails and iron balusters. Thinking about new parts? How Long It Takes

A typical stair job takes 3 to 5 days.

Every job starts with a free on-site estimate. We look at your stairs in person and talk through what you want. You then get an on-site measure and a written, itemized estimate before any work starts. We do not post prices for stairs, because the price depends on the staircase in front of us. The cost guide explains what drives the cost.

We offer painting of risers and balusters as an option, so ask about it at the estimate. If you skip it, stain can mark painted risers, stringers and trim, and you will want a painter to touch those up. To set up your estimate, call or text 470-826-3581 or send us a request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you refinish stairs to match my floors?

Yes. We choose the stain and finish with your floors in mind. In Woodstock we resanded a home's main level and stair treads and finished both in Provincial stain with oil-based polyurethane, so the stairs match the floor. In Canton we refinished the stair treads, handrails and posts to match a Dark Walnut floor. Rails and posts are sanded by hand rather than flat with a machine, so their color will be similar to the floors, not an exact match.

Can you refinish stair rails and newels?

Yes. Existing rails and newels are sanded down by hand, not machine-sanded flat like the floors, and then refinished, so expect a slightly different look and some roughness on the undersides and posts. New rails that we install arrive raw, so we sand them lightly to clean them up and then stain and finish them. The color will be similar to your floors, not an exact match. If you want new rails or newels instead, we install those too; see stair tread and baluster replacement.

Can you replace carpet on stairs with hardwood?

Yes. We take up the carpet, pad, tack strips and staples, then install hardwood treads and risers and finish them to match your floors.

How long does stair refinishing take?

A typical stair job takes 3 to 5 days. Before any work starts you get a free on-site estimate and a written, itemized estimate.

Do you also replace treads and balusters?

Yes. We install new treads, risers, balusters, newels and handrails and we refinish, so one crew does the whole job from tear-out to the final finish. See stair tread and baluster replacement for the parts we install.

Do you serve Canton, Marietta and Roswell?

Yes. We serve all three from Woodstock. See our Canton hardwood flooring, Marietta hardwood flooring and Roswell hardwood flooring pages.

Is stair refinishing warrantied?

Yes. Stair installs and full stair refinishes carry the same 1-year warranty as our floors: stair parts we install are covered against coming loose or separating because of our workmanship, and the finish on stair parts we sand and refinish, plus our optional paint on risers and balusters, is covered against peeling, cracking and chipping. Normal wear (especially on tread edges), squeaks, seasonal gaps, parts supplied by others and an exact stain match on rails and posts are not covered. See the warranty page for the full terms.
